Yngwie J. Malmsteen, cuyo nombre real es Lars Johann Yngwie Lannerback (nacido el 30 de junio de 1963 en Estocolmo, Suecia), es un guitarrista. Fue parte de agrupaciones como Steeler y Alcatrazz.

Biografía
Yngwie Malmsteen nació el 30 de Junio de 1963, en Estocolmo, Suecia. Su obsesión por la guitarra comenzó cuando vió un show de televisión sobre la muerte de Jimi Hendrix. Emigró a los EE.UU. a la edad de 17, después de ser descubierto por un cazatalentos que le ofreció grabar un álbum con una formación llamada Steeler. Una vez allí, grabó con dicha formación el único álbum de la banda. Dentro de ese álbum, el solo de guitarra de "hot on your heels", ya dejaba entrever un guitarrista con un talento y dotes inegables. En el primer concierto con la banda, hubo como público unas treinta personas. Tanto impresionó a esa poca gente, que la voz se corrió por todo el estado. A su siguiente concierto acudieron grandes mitos del rock, como Ozzy Osbourne, miembros de Kiss etc, quienes quedaron asombrados por la capacidad del Sueco con el instrumento, quien mezclaba velocidad y virtuosismo como si de un juego se tratara. Más tarde abandonó Steeler para unirse a un proyecto mucho más ambicioso, Alcatrazz, en el que se encontraba el vocalista ex-rainbow Graham Bonnett. Juntos grabaron el álbum "no parole from rock ´n roll", con unos temas compuestos en su gran mayoría por Malmsteen.

El grupo cosechó numerosos éxitos, sobre todo en Japón. En aquel país dieron gran cantidad de conciertos. Los miembros de la formación enseguida se dieron cuenta que el público iba en su gran mayoría a ver a Malmsteen. Antes de salir al escenario, la gente gritaba "Yngwie, Yngwie..." y durante los conciertos, él era el centro de todas las miradas. Más tarde, aprovechando el tirón que tuvo con Steeler, decidió iniciar una gran carrera en solitario, que dura hasta nuestros días (2007) la cual comenzó allá por 1984, con el álbum nominado a los grammy por mejor disco instrumental no comercial, "Rising Force". El público en general enseguida reconoció el talento de Malmsteen con el instrumento, recogiendo premios ese mismo año por numerosos medios de comunicación norteamericanos especializados, como mejor nuevo talento, mejor guistarrista etc. Al mismo tiempo, Steve Vai fue su sustituto en Alcatrazz. Pese a ser un gran guitarrista (Vai), Alcatrazz se hundió inmediatamente. El mismo Vai afirmó más tarde que la gente lo que quería era ver a Yngwie, y que no pudo competir contra su velocidad. Durante toda su carrera, dejó composiciones increíbles tales como "Trilogy suite Op.5", ventas multimillonarias de discos, número uno en numerosos países etc.

Es conocido debido a su velocidad de ejecución dentro del estilo heavy metal y metal melódico. Su técnica lo llevó a incorporar elementos de la técnica de digitación del violín al estilo de Niccolò Paganini, así como fragmentos estilísticos melódicos y armónicos barrocos. Sus siguientes discos son mezcla de temas instrumentales y cantados, siempre en la misma línea clásica. En el año 2003 se une con Steve Vai y con Joe Satriani para el tour G3.
Fender fabrica una guitarra con su nombre Yngwie Malmsteen Stratocaster.
